Day 1 : Arrive Tokyo

Arrive Tokyo Narita or Haneda Airport, and take the “Airport Limousine” bus service to travel into central Tokyo.

Stay 2 nights.

Day 2 : Tokyo

Explore Tokyo on your own, or choose one of JTB’s wide range of “Sunrise Tours”: optional excursions with English-speaking guide.

Day 3 : Tokyo - Nikko

Travel to Nikko,

Stay 2 nights.

Day 4 : Nikko

A second day to explore Nikko and the picturesque Chuzenji Falls.

Day 5 : Nikko - Sendai

Travel on to Sendai using your 14-day Japan Rail Pass, via Utsunomiya and the Bullet train (approx 2.5hrs).

Stay 2 nights.

Day 6 : Sendai

Why not visit the fascinating town of Matsushima, just 25 mins away by train, using your Rail Pass.

Day 7 : Sendai - Hiraizumi

Travel to Hiraizumi using your Japan Rail Pass (approx 1 hr).

Stay 1 night.

Day 8 : Hiraizumi - Nyuto Onsen

Travel onwards to the most northerly point on the trip, Nyuto Onsen. Take the train to Morioka, then the Bullet train to Tazawako using your Japan Rail Pass. Then take the bus to Nyuto Onsen, deep in the mountains of Akita Prefecture.

Stay 1 night in a ryokan (Japanese inn) with Japanese dinner and breakfast.

Day 9 : Nyuto Onsen - Kakunodate

Travel to Kakunodate. Return to Tazawako by bus, then ride the Bullet train the short distance to Kakunodate.

Stay 1 night.

Day 10 : Kakunodate - Sado Island

Travel to Sado Island.

Stay 2 nights in a ryokan (Japanese inn) with Japanese dinner and breakfast.

Day 11 : Sado Island -

Full day free to explore Sado Island.

Day 12 : Sado Island - Kanazawa

Take the hydrofoil to Niigata, then the Bullet train via Takasaki to Kanazawa.

Stay 1 night.

Day 13 : Kanazawa - Kyoto

After exploring Kanazawa, take the train to Kyoto.

Stay 3 nights.

Day 14 : Kyoto

Full day free at leisure to explore this historic city.

Day 15 : Kyoto

Full day free at leisure. Why not visit the nearby historic city of Nara, with its deer park and the massive Todaiji Temple.

Day 16 : Depart Osaka (KIX)

After breakfast, take the airport bus to Kansai International Airport (KIX) for departure.
