Stay 2 nights at a ryokan (Japanese inn) including Japanese dinner and breakfast.

Day 5 : Kurokawa Onsen - Mt. Aso

Today, drive to Mt.Aso, the volcano in the centre of Kyushu (approx.1 hour). This is one of the only places where you can view the crater of an active volcano. After the earthquake in April 2016, the cablecar to the crater has been stopped; access is by shuttle bus instead.

Return to Kurokawa Onsen.

Day 6 : Kurokawa Onsen - Takachiho

Drive to Takachiho.

Takachiho Gorge is a narrow chasm cut through the rock by the Gokase River. The nearly sheer cliffs lining the gorge and the tranquil river below are very picturesque. There are two ways to enjoy the gorge. In a rental boat available at the south end of the gorge, you can get a close-up view of the cliffs and waterfall from below. The water is calm and easy to navigate. Alternatively you can appreciate the beautiful spectacle and views almot vertically down to the river, by walking the paved path that runs along the edge of the gorge. The trail is around 1km long, eventually leading to the Takachiho Shrine.

Stay for 2 nights.

Day 12 : Kagoshima - Kumamoto

Drive to Kumamoto.

The city’s castle is one of the most impressive in Japan, but it suffered serious damage in the earthquake of April 2016 and the inner grounds are currently closed to the public; however, it is possible to look at the massive fortress from the outside.
