Spend another free day enjoying the sites of Tokyo.
Visit the hidden-treasures of Tokyo, such as Gotokuji Temple where there are numerous maneki neko (“the beckoning cat”) statues.
Why not visit the Borderless exhibition – a world of artworks without boundaries, a museum without a map created by art collective teamLab.
Transfer by shuttle bus to the airport in Tokyo this morning, where you will take your domestic flight down to Oita in Kyushu.
Pick up your hire car on arrival in Oita, and drive to Kurokawa Onsen – a picturesque town located around 1.5 hours from the airport, famous for its outstanding hot-spring baths.
Upon arrival, check in to your ryokan (Japanese-style inn), and spend the rest of your day hot-spring hopping around the town’s many attractive baths. Enjoy an authentic Japanese “kaiseki” dinner during both evenings of your stay.
Stay for 2 nights.
Spend today exploring Kyushu’s beautiful natural landscape by car.
First, head to Mt. Aso, the volcano in the centre of the island (approx.1 hour from Kurokawa Onsen). The spectacular crater, which ranks among the world’s largest, has a circumference of over 100 kilometres!
Later, take a trip to the magnificent Nabegataki Falls, and walk behind its unique curtain of water. Return to your ryokan in Kurokawa Onsen this evening in time for dinner.
Travel to the east coast today for your final destination – Beppu.
This popular resort town offers a huge range of baths for tourists to enjoy – from regular hot-spring baths, to mud, steam, and even sand baths, where your entire body gets buried in the hot sands. The local “Hells of Beppu” are several beautiful geothermal steaming-hot ponds for viewing (rather than bathing), and are also well worth a visit.
Have this day free at leisure.
Take a short trip to the nearby quaint town of Yufuin this morning to visit the numerous art galleries, trendy cafés, and boutique stores.
Or, stay in Beppu and try your hand at cooking like a local, using the abundant steam generated from the geothermal activity at the “Jigokumushi Kobo Steam Cooking Center”.
When you are ready, head back to Oita Airport (around a 45-minute drive). At the airport, drop-off your hire car and check in for your departing flight back to Tokyo.
