Kumamoto Castle

About Kumamoto

Kumamoto is the capital of Kumamoto prefecture on the island of Kyushu. It is a major city on Kyushu’s west coast with a population of 650,000.
Its main tourist attractions consist of Mt. Aso, one of the world’s largest active volcanoes, Kumamoto castle and Suizenji park. There is also an amusement park “Mitsui Greenland” in Arao.
Kumamoto Castle is one of the most beautiful castles in Japan, and the third largest.

  • The beautiful reconstruction of the original castle
  • Hosokawa Residence where high-ranked samurai used to live
  • Suizenji-Jojuen garden that reproduces 53 Tokaido post stations

Most of the original castle was burned down during the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877: the current keep is a concrete reconstruction sensitively restored in the 1960’s. Some of the other buildings in the complex are the originals. The castle is a must-see attraction which is effectively the heart of the city.
