Hot springs, Beppu

About Beppu

Located in Oita prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Beppu is one of Japan’s most famous hot spring resorts, producing more hot spring water than any other resort in the country.
A coastal town, Beppu is backed by mountains which has led to its development along the coast: while not very large, it is rather long. Most of the most well-known hot springs (onsen) and the tourist attractions, including most of the Jigoku or “hells”, are in the Kannawa area which is on the far side of the city from the train station.

  • Hot springs (onsen)
  • Umitamago Aquarium
  • Takasaki Monkey Park

Because of the distances involved in travelling around the city, visitors to the city for the hot springs usually stay locally in the onsen areas; many of the onsen facilities are open very late.

Practical information:

  • From Tokyo, fly to Oita and take airport bus service to Beppu
  • From Osaka or Kyoto, take the Bullet train to Kokura and then local express train
  • On our Google map
