Located in Oita prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Beppu is one of Japan’s most famous hot spring resorts. It produces more hot spring water than any other resort in the country. In fact, it contains 10 of 11 types of hot spring water that exists in the world.
A coastal town, Beppu is backed by mountains which have led to its development along the coast. While not very large, it is rather long. Most of the most well-known hot springs (onsen) and the tourist attractions, including most of the Jigoku or “hells”, are in the Kannawa and the Kamegawa areas. This area is on the far side of the city from the train station.
Other areas besides Kannawa where you can bathe in hot spring water are Beppu Onsen, Myoban Onsen, Kankaiji Onsen, Hamawaki Onsen, Kamegawa Onsen, Horita Onsen, and Shibaseki Onsen. In total, there are 8 that you can choose from, all in the vicinity of Beppu Town.
For those who do not wish to bathe in hot springs, you can instead enjoy a sand bath. Here, you are buried with naturally heated sand that is warmed by the steam of a hot spring.
