Lake Kinrinku, Yufuin

About Yufuin

Yufuin in Kyushu is a small but popular hot spring resort, about ten kilometers inland from Beppu. Yufuin has a many small shops, cafes, boutiques and art museums, and is popular as a place just to stroll around.

The town is surrounded by mountains. The twin-peaked Mount Yufu can be seen from the town and serves as the backdrop for many scenic views. The area is rural, and not far from the main walking routes are the rice paddies and farm houses that surround the town.

Yufuin can be easily explored on foot, and the majority of the town’s attractions are along the main street which leads up from the station to Lake Kinrinko (1.5 km, around 20-30 mins walk).

  • Main street (shops, boutiques)
  • Lake Kinrinku
  • Bathhouses and ryokan around the town

The ryokans and hotels of Yufuin are dotted around the town, not clustered along the main street like in many other resort towns. Instead, the long straight main street leading up from the station is lined with cafes, boutiques and small museums, making Yufuin seem more like a trendy shopping area than a traditional onsen town. But there is a large number of lodgings with hot spring baths, some of which open their baths to non-staying guests during daytime.

Another natural landmark of Yufuin besides Mount Yufu is Lake Kinrinko. The small lake is located at the end of the town’s main walking route. Walking paths surround this very picturesque and tranquil lake, and there is a small shrine on the lakeside.
