About Kobe

Kobe is the capital of Hyogo Prefecture and one of Japan’s ten largest cities. Located between the sea and the Rokko mountain range, Kobe is also considered one of Japan’s most attractive cities.

Kobe has been an important port city for many centuries. Its port was one of the first Japanese ports to be opened to foreign trade in the late Edo Period, and the city remains one of Japan’s more cosmopolitan cities.

  • Kitano, a former residential area of foreign merchants
  • Sorakuen, a traditional Japanese landscape garden
  • Kobe’s chinatown called Nankinmachi
  • Kobe Harborland’s shopping and entertainment district
  • Mount Rokko offering panoramic views of Kobe and Osaka
  • The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, the world’s longest suspension bridge

In January 1995, the city was hit by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, which killed over 5,000 people and destroyed tens of thousands of buildings. A decade later, it has been completely rebuilt, and few signs of the terrible event remain.

INTERNATIONAL DELICACIES

Don’t forget to taste the famous “Kobe beef” or wagyu. This highly-prized meat was introduced in Japan in the second century. As beef consumption rose, farmers began hiring workers to massage the beef cattle, to improve meat quality.

Herd isolation and particular feeding techniques – because of the limited availability of land – have led to distinguishing features that make the meat both superior in marbling and in the ratio of unsaturated versus saturated fats.
