Hakone

Mt.Fuji from Lake Ashi, Fuji-Hakone National Park

About Hakone

Hakone is located in the mountainous far west of Kanagawa Prefecture, on the eastern side of Hakone Pass about 1hr 15 mins from Tokyo.

Most of the town is within the borders of the volcanically active Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, centred around Lake Ashi.
Famous for hot springs, outdoor activities, natural beauty and the view of nearby Mt. Fuji, Hakone is one of the most popular destinations among Japanese and international tourists looking for a break from Tokyo.

Besides being the area of Japan’s oldest and most famous spa, the town has an interesting history, beautiful surroundings and a cool climate year round.

  • Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and its active volcanos around Lake Ashi
  • Mount Fuji
  • Famous hot springs nicknamed “Hakone Seventeen Spas”

PLACES AND EXPERIENCES

Volcanic scenery includes the Owakudani volcano, with its pools of bubbling, sulphurous water. Most hotels and inns in the area have hot spa (onsen) facilities. The picturesque Lake Ashi, nestling among mountains, provides one of the best views of Mt.Fuji.

Other attractions include the Hakone Open Air Museum with one of the finest collections of modern sculpture, and the MOA Museum of Art in Atami, located in a very interesting building with impressive sea views.

MT. FUJI

This finely-formed volcanic cone (Fuji-san in Japanese) is a stunning sight. Rising to a height of 3,776 m, it looks more like a man-made work of art than the work of nature.

When travelling on the Bullet train out of Tokyo in the Osaka direction, try to get your seat on the right-hand side, for an impressive view of Mt. Fuji in the distance, about 45 minutes into the journey.

In Japanese culture, the mountain is a mythical, fundamental theme in art, music and literature.

For many Japanese, the mountain has a religious significance too, and the quite arduous ascent to the summit is undertaken by young and old as a kind of pilgrimage. As the Japanese saying goes, “You’d be a fool not to climb Mount Fuji once, and a fool to climb it twice”. The usual climbing schedule is to climb the mountain at night to reach the top in time to see the rising sun, the symbol of the Japanese nation. The ascent of the mountain is only possible in July and August, when the peak is free of snow. The experience is thoroughly recommended; we can arrange it for anyone visiting Japan in the summer season.
