About Busan

The largest port city in South Korea, Busan is known for its beaches, mountains and temples. It is called the summer capital of Korea since it attracts tourists from all over the country to its six beaches. The country’s largest beach, Haeundae, is 40 mins away from central Busan and has luxury hotels, a carnival boardwalk and the Sea Life Aquarium. Beomeosa Temple, a Buddhist shrine founded in 678 A.D., is at the base of Geumjeong Mountain, which has hiking trails.

  • Haeundae Beach (very busy in summer)
  • Beomeosa - on the slopes of Geumjeongsan
  • Jagalchi fish market - on the edge of Nampo Port

Busan was one of the few areas in Korea that remained under the control of South Korea throughout the Korean War: for some time it served as a temporary capital of the Republic of Korea. Since then, the city has developed a strong urban character.

Practical information:

  • From Seoul, the high-speed KTX train takes around 3 hours
  • Busan is the departure port for ferries to Japan: an overnight service operated by Kampu Ferries goes to Shimonoseki, and fast hydrofoil service (JR Beetle) to Fukuoka 4-5 times per day, taking just under 3 hours
