Hong Kong

Since its handover from the United Kingdom on 1st July 1997, Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. It comprises not only the famous Hong Kong Island but also the Kowloon Peninsula facing the island, around 200 other islands, and the New Territories which stretch up to the border with China. Situated on China's south coast on the South China Sea, it is renowned for its dramatic urban skyline and deep natural harbour.

With an area of around 425 sq. miles and a population of seven million people, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated areas in the world, and one of the world's leading international financial centres.

The name "Hong Kong" is an approximate phonetic rendering of the pronunciation of the Cantonese name "香港"(Xiānggǎng) meaning "fragrant harbour".

Hong Kong is frequently described as a place where "East meets West", reflecting the mix of Chinese roots with influences from its time as a British colony. Hong Kong balances a modernised way of life with traditional Chinese practices.
